  13. <p>   [Text] Addis Ababa, April 1 (AFP)--Ethiopian church groups
  14. have warned that their country is facing a major famine and
  15. said nine million Ethiopians were in need of relief.
  16. </p>
  17. <p>   The Joint Relief Partnership, which brings together the
  18. Ethiopian Catholic, Orthodox and Evangelical Churches, told a
  19. press conference on Monday [30 March] that several regions were
  20. in the grip of a severe drought.
  21. </p>
  22. <p>   It warned that the famine could prove as devastating as one
  23. in 1984 and 1985, in which 250,000 died.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>   People and livestock were beginning to perish in Ogaden, in
  26. the southeast, and Borneo in central Ethiopia, the church
  27. groups said.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>   Orthodox archbishop Abune Themoteos said world attention had
  30. been focussed on crises in the former Soviet Union, Yugoslavia
  31. and South Africa, and Ethiopia had been forgotten.
  32. </p>
  33. <p>   Church officials said pledges of international assistance so
  34. far would cover only one-third the country's needs.
